1. joint responsibility of all members of a group for the actions of the group as a whole or the actions of its individual members:

- mutual (collective) responsibility;

- responsibility for each other;

- mutual guarantee.

     ♦ "Ну, насчет общины, - промолвил он, - поговорите лучше с вашим братцем. Он теперь, кажется, изведал на деле, что такое община, круговая порука, трезвость и тому подобные штучки" (Тургенев 2). "Well, so far as the commune is concerned," he said, "you'd better talk with your brother about it. I think he has now learned by experience what the commune is: mutual responsibility, sobriety, and all that kind of thing" (2f).

     ♦ Дворянство обязывало. Разумеется, так как его права были долею фантастические, то и обязанности были фантастические, но они делали известную круговую поруку между равными (Герцен 2). Noble rank had its obligations. Of course, since its rights were partly imaginary, its obligations were imaginary too, but they did provide a certain mutual guarantee between equals (2a).

2. mutual support and concealment (often among participants in improper or criminal matters):

- covering (up) for each other (one another);

- vouching for each other (one another).

It was hard for us to interpret the actions of these people [the investigators]... But there is no doubt that, like any other isolated, exclusive caste - the professional criminals, for example - they lived by their own laws, contemptuous of the interests of society as a whole. Closed societies of this kind...cover up for each other (as long as it suits them), guard their secrets, avoid contact with outsiders, and sometimes, for obscure reasons, engage in mutual destruction (2a).
